She Escaped with Her Life, Organs Intact!

How a teenage girl in Myanmar got away from organ harvesters

On Myanmar’s Independence Day this past January 4, That Chit and a friend were playing a game in a public place. Suddenly, a woman grabbed her and forcibly took her away in a three-wheel vehicle. Weak and bound so that she could not talk, That Chit could not even call for help as the vehicle went right past her house. Imagine the horror of being unable to make a sound as you saw your own home recede in the distance!

That Chit was taken to a Hindu place where dead bodies are kept. She saw dismembered fingers lying on the ground outside as they entered a very dark room. She remembers being injected with something, but the details were hazy.

That Chit saw a pregnant woman being beaten to death with a big iron stick so that her organs could be harvested. She began to shout and scream. Her captors drugged her again, forcing her into sleep and silence. All she can remember from that time is being in tremendous pain, praying that she could somehow escape and return home, and seeing seven- and eight-year-old children who had also been kidnapped.

When That Chit’s parents realized she was missing, they went straight to the police. “It’s not our problem” was the unconcerned response. Desperate for help, the parents came to our partner’s center, where the staff prayed urgently with them. They also posted That Chit’s picture on Facebook. According to That Chit, the captors saw the Facebook post and decided not to kill her. But they didn’t let her go.

Two days later, That Chit found a window and escaped. Though still dazed, she saw a man and told him what had happened and where her home was. He put her on a small boat to a town near her home. That Chit remembers getting out of the boat and standing confused on a street, unsure about what to do and where to go. Amazingly, her aunt spotted her almost immediately and said, “This is my niece who we’ve been searching for!” She took That Chit by the arm and guided her home.

We are so grateful that That Chit escaped with her life! Thankfully, her parents had our partners to turn to, and through urgent prayer and the mercy of God, she is now safe. That Chit has already experienced tremendous healing through prayer and counseling and she goes to our partner’s center every day. She is growing in her walk with the Lord because of the discipleship she is receiving there.
