Many of North America's 350,000 Amish have lost their spiritual heritage. They do not have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. They have not been born again. Can you help send them the light of the gospel?
If you are like I once was, you may look at the Amish as a group of genuine Christians who, for some unknown reason, live as people did 100 years ago. Once you dig a little deeper, however, as I have, you discover something much different.
My wife and I moved into the heart of Pennsylvania's third-largest Amish community about two years ago, but we began interfacing with the local Amish people at least five years before that. We slowly began to realize that most, if not all of the Amish living around us, have never been born again. They have no real relationship with the Lord. Most are hesitant to talk about the Bible or spiritual things. In fact, group Bible studies are often forbidden by Amish bishops, and reading the Bible is often discouraged, as it is considered "dangerous." Amish people who read the Bible are apt to "be deceived" and leave the Amish.
Twice-monthly Amish church gatherings are conducted mostly in old German, and the Bible reading is from a German Bible. Many of the people cannot understand what is being said, or they only partially understand.
Amish people do what they do because they believe they will go to hell otherwise. Salvation is something that is earned by keeping hundreds of manmade rules, and there is no assurance of salvation. Anyone who is sure of their salvation is considered prideful, and their assurance is grounds for excommunication. To leave the Amish is a certain ticket to hell, and those who do will be shunned for life by their closest family members, communities and friends. It is tragic.
Amish people are discouraged by their leaders from reading their Bibles for themselves and many will never hear the gospel.
As we investigated further into our local Amish community and other Amish communities, what we discovered shocked us. We were not prepared to learn of levels of alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, incest, and child abuse that exists. In a nearby Amish community, we learned that, in the past two years, two men have gone to prison for pedophilia. But most pedophilia in Amish communities goes unreported. Victims are told they must forgive the predators and never mention what has happened.
The good news in all of this is that God has given us a breakthrough. Through a providential meeting with an Amish minister and bishop, an awakening has begun within the Johnsonburg Amish community, which is about 30 minutes from where we live. At least 30 Amish adults have been born again over the past 12 months, and their numbers continue to grow. They meet every week now in six Bible studies. All of them have been excommunicated from the Amish and are being shunned to some degree by their still-Amish family members and former Amish friends. But they have all found the "treasure in the field" (Matt. 13:44). And they are sharing the gospel that has changed their lives and eternal destinies.
The Johnsonburg Awakening has also spread to Colorado where there are now three weekly Bible studies attended by spiritually-hungry Amish folks. The Amish Awakening seems to be gaining momentum!
In June of 2022, we decided to mail a report about the Johnsonburg Awakening to about 63,000 mostly-Amish households using a mail list borrowed from a ministry that reaches out to the Amish world. In that letter, we also shared the gospel and the scriptural basis for the necessity of being born again. (You can read that article at HeavensFamily.org/Johnsonburg.)
Two dozen Amish adults have been excommunicated for being born again. Some have lost jobs. All have lost family and friends.
Within a few weeks, we received over 200 written responses, equally divided between positive and negative. Among the positive responses were requests for English Bibles and more information about being born again, requests that we fulfilled. The best news is that there were Amish folks who were born again because of our June mailing, and they have in turn since led other Amish folks to the Lord!
I've also received phone calls from Amish people all across North America, and I've talked with spiritually-hungry Amish people who feel trapped in the darkness of their dead religion. There is plenty of "good soil" among the Amish, but it is covered with a layer of fear. And they will never be reached through television, radio, or church services. The only way to reach the Amish with the gospel is either verbally (one-on-one) or through the printed page.
That is why we've decided to launch a periodical magazine just for Amish people that we're calling The Awakening! The tag line on the front cover is, "Chronicling the Anabaptist Rediscovery of Their Special Spiritual Heritage." Every issue of The Awakening! will include reports of Amish lives that are being transformed by the gospel, as well as biblical teaching that is relevant to Amish belief and culture. We expect that the Lord is going to use it to spark Amish awakenings in many places!
The first 16-page issue will be mailed in late February or early March. You can read it by clicking this link. The first issue contains many excerpts from letters I received in response to our June mailing. Some of those letters are from born-again Amish folks! Two of them are from Amish bishops! So, in a sense, we are using born-again Amish folks to reach non-born-again Amish folks!
We've also compiled a brand-new, up-to-date, Amish household mail list that is derived from scores of Amish community directories we've purchased from all over the country. And we temporarily hired five full-time employees in the Philippines to enter all those addresses into a spreadsheet that our printer can convert into mailing labels. All together, we've got a mail list that includes almost 61,000 households. That could be 95% of all Amish households in North America.
We hope to send a new issue of The Awakening! every three months. The cost each time is about $47,000. That sounds like a lot of money (and it is!), but it breaks down to only 76 cents per household.
Can you help us with this unprecedented outreach? For just $7.60, you can be the reason that 10 Amish households encounter the gospel in a way they understand. For $76, you can reach 100 Amish household with the gospel. For $760, you can reach 1,000 households.
We are praying especially for monthly partners who will not only be helping us with the ongoing costs of printing and mailing quarterly issues of The Awakening!, but also help us with all the follow-up work as we serve those who respond. You can quickly and easily have your monthly tax-deductible donation automatically deducted from your bank account or charged to your credit card. (See the instructions that follow.) Just remember that every 76 cents you invest will make it possible for one Amish household to receive The Awakening! in their mail box. You could one day meet former Amish people in heaven who will be there, in part, because of your sacrifice on their behalf.
In closing, thank you, on behalf of tens of thousands of Amish people for whom Jesus died, but most of whom do not yet understand yet why He did die. Our hope is to soon change that!
So glad for the us in Jesus,
